The Twentieth Century in Paint (ARC Linkage Project administered by University of Melbourne) (2009–2012)

Abstract:
The project examines the introduction of new media, pigments, dyes and additives that led to revolutionary art practices in the 20th century in Australia and SE Pacific. It explores how the use of these materials impacts on paint handling, performance and permanence. This research will inform the preservation of modern art, and fill critical gaps in our understanding of the effect of diverse climates on artworks. Utilising expertise and collections in ten public institutions and four universities across four continents this project provides fundamental information for questions relating to conservation, curatorial practice and paint manufacture.
