Understanding Police and Ethnic Group Interactions: Testing an Integrated Theoretical Model (2010–2012)

Abstract:
Serious questions have been raised about declining levels of trust and confidence in the police among sections of the Australian population. This has implications for police/community interactions and the maintenance of social order. This project will use both quantitative (surveys) and qualitative (interviews) methods to test an integrated social theory aimed at understanding how perceptions of fairness, confidence and social connectedness influence people s willingness to cooperate with police. The research will provide important theoretical and policy contributions to the field of policing and identify factors that shape relationships between the police and ethnic communities.
