Textual traditions, identity and cultural production in contemporary Bali (2011–2013)

Abstract:
This project explores the revitalisation of the traditional verbal art form of textual singing and interpretation (mabebasan) in Bali, both in its customary religious and literary contexts and in its transformation into a vibrant form of popular culture in the broadcast media. Set in the context of the revival of local tradition and the construction of regional identities in contemporary Indonesia, this examination of the concerns of Balinese with their unique textual heritage will lead to new understandings of cultural production in Bali and illuminate the interdependence of media and literary practices as they are reconceptualised during a period of significant social and political transformation in Indonesia.
