Operation of nerve cell networks in the neocortex (2011–2015)

Abstract:
A mechanistic understanding of the function of the neocortex and its dysfunction in disease can only be achieved by directly linking the functional operation of neurons in this area of the brain to the operation of neocortical neural networks. I will capitalize on groundwork laid by the establishment of technically demanding experimental techniques to investigate two key problems: i) to discover how cortico-cortical and re-entrant intracortical circuits operate, and ii) to investigate the disturbance of neuronal excitability in animal models of intellectual disabilities. These problems will be addressed using a powerful combination of optogenetic, electrophysiological and optical imaging approaches.
