Breaking the cycle of homelessness: An identity change approach to enhance resilience and well-being (2011–2014)

Abstract:
At present, our understanding of the extent to which the cycle of homelessness can be broken is limited. A psychological analysis has the potential to fill this gap by examining how individuals' well-being, resilience and capacity to break the cycle of homelessness are affected by an understanding of identity transitions, availability of effective social support, perceived stigma, and barriers posed by mental illness and addiction. We examine our research questions longitudinally among people in Salvation Army homelessness shelters. The significance of the research lies in the application of psychological theorizing to homelessness research and this will directly contribute to the development of guidelines for homelessness services.
