Income insecurity in Australia: who is feeling the pinch and why? (2012–2014)

Abstract:
Income insecurity is a major concern for households. Many labor market and industrial policies meant to improve economic efficiency at the aggregate levels have the side effects of increasing income uncertainty at the individual level. This project aims to develop a new framework and a new index to measure income insecurity in Australia, and to investigate its determinants. The project will provide an evaluation of the welfare cost of high income risk as compared to the benefit of income growth, and of the effectiveness of government taxes and transfers in alleviating income insecurity for different population sub-groups in Australia. It also provides a comparative analysis between Australia and selected OECD countries.
