Harnessing non-invasive brain stimulation to improve language function in healthy and pathological ageing. (2013–2017)

Abstract:
Language impairments are frequently observed in healthy older people and constitute core symptoms of ageing-associated pathological conditions, including post-stroke language impairments (aphasia) and precursors of Alzheimer's Dementia (amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment, aMCI). This research will use a novel non-invasive brain stimulation technique in combination with modern brain imaging techniques to study the neural underpinnings of impaired language functions in healthy and pathological ageing. Based on these findings, new evidence-based treatments will be developed and evaluated. The findings of this research have the potential to identify new ways of treating language impairments in elderly people.
