Hide and speak - Colour communication in reef fish (2005–2008)

Abstract:
Fish live in a markedly different environment to ourselves and their visual abilities and appearance have adapted to it in ways that we are only just beginning to understand. This project focuses on visual communication in reef fish and specifically on the solutions that have evolved to satisfy the contrary constraints of visibility to rivals and mates versus invisibility to predators. During development young fish are exposed to a number of environments that are quite different to that experienced as an adult. The study will therefore consider how communication solutions change across the entire lifespan of the fish
