Graded Biomaterial for Articular Cartilage Replacement (2005–2007)

In a radical new approach to biomaterials development we plan to produce a viable implant to repair articular cartilage disorders or injuries. We aim to assemble a laminated biomaterial which possesses biomimetic mechanical properties. It will be constructed from a careful selection of naturally occurring polysaccharides which are combined and modified to provide a complex nondegradable structural biomaterial. Through the study of frictional properties tensile strength and compressive stiffness a functional material which mimics the performance of native cartilage will be produced
