Learning essential knowledge by design: Promoting and connecting mathematics and science in the middle years of schooling. (2007–2010)

Key ideas from mathematics and science form the basis of essential knowledge for future citizenship. The difficulties students encounter learning these ideas are well documented and have led to calls for new approaches to curriculum, pedagogy and assessment. It is in the middle years of schooling that essential ideas become explicit in the mathematics and science curriculum. The challenge to teachers is to connect these essential ideas to students. This project brings middle years mathematics and science teachers together around this important topic, to provide an opportunity for them explicate the common core themes of mathematics and science and to reflect upon their classroom practice and the learning outcomes of their students.'',
