Genomic tools for the emerging tropical rock lobster aquaculture industry (2011–2014)
Wild-caught tropical rock lobsters is Australia's most valuable fishery, worth $45M per year, but has limited capacity to expand. Recent advances in captive culture means aquaculture of the tropical rock lobster is poised to emerge as a new, high value industry for Australia. Our project will expedite this exciting new
industry by generating genomic resources for advanced selective breeding of farmed lobsters and
accelerated gains in economically important traits like growth and disease resistance. Also, we will identify genes underlying larval metamorphosis to facilitate better hatchery control of this difficult stage and will identify genetic markers ideal for tracing Australian products on the world market to protect consumer confidence.
