Quantum measurements: new, better, easier (2016–2020)

Abstract:
Quantum measurements are the principal means by which we gain access to and characterise the quantum world. At present the kinds of measurements that are routinely performed in the laboratory are rudimentary and a small subset of the measurements allowed by quantum theory. This project aims to: engineer new state-of-the-art quantum measurements; devise the best ways of sensing quantum signals; and make quantum measurements and characterisation of large quantum systems easier to do. The new, better and easier measurements that result from this project will greatly advance quantum technologies. Specifically, they will allow for more efficient characterisation of quantum computers and enable us to engineer the ultimate quantum sensors.
