Sustainable Wastewater Management (2017)

Abstract:
This project aims to develop innovative wastewater technologies and the underpinning science to extract valuable products from wastewater with minimised greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption, such as medium chain fatty acids that have low oxygen/carbon ratio and high energy density as suitable precursors for biofuels, in addition to clean water. Traditional wastewater treatment remove organic carbon and nutrients by using vast amounts of energy and releasing greenhouse gas. However, wastewater typically represents a substantial, but largely untapped, renewable resource. The intended outcome of the project will transform wastewater from a troublesome pollutant to a valuable resource and reduce large quantities of carbon footprints.
