Developing classroom norms of inquiry based learning in mathematics (2017–2020)

Abstract:
This project aims to create new knowledge about inquiry norms in primary mathematics classrooms, including expert teachers¿ signature practices, how norms are developed and their impact on learning. Classroom norms dictate the learning environment in school mathematics. However, students have lost interest in STEM subjects largely due to current classroom norms that suppress critical and creative thinking, neglect the relevance of mathematics, silence discussions that deepen mathematical understanding and stifle intellectual risks for fear of getting an answer wrong. Inquiry norms engage students in productive social interactions, improve their mathematical knowledge as well as their interest, valuing and capacity to solve complex problems.
