Unravelling the major transformation mechanism of disk galaxies (ARC Discovery Project administered by The University of Western Australia) (2017–2020)

Abstract:
When and how lenticular (S0) galaxies formed in various environments has been discussed over 80 years, since they were first introduced as a possible transition between elliptical and spiral galaxies. This project aims to resolve this long-standing S0 problem of their formation based on an extensive comparison between the latest observations at various wavelengths and high-resolution computer simulations. It also aims to greatly advance our physical understanding of star formation, gas and dust evolution, and morphological transformation driven by environments. The expected benefit of this project is to solve the problem of S0 formation and provide new models to interpret the large volumes of data generated by Australian surveys.
