Cultural Constructions of Bali in the Nineteenth Century (2005–2006)

Abstract:

This project seeks to discover the foundations of Balinese cultural identities in the nineteenth century. It uses original Dutch and Balinese sources to analyse the ways in which both sides imagined and constructed traditional Balinese identity in the period between 1817 and 1908 when the island was incorporated into the Dutch colonial state. By refocusing attention on the sources of the period particularly the Balinese historical texts and early Dutch ethnographies that have been largely marginalised in academic studies the project will contribute to new understandings of Balinese cultural and religious identities in the context of colonial and postcolonial studies. The project will produce a major book and several journal articles
