Sensing single electrons with single molecules (2007–2009)

Abstract:
We propose a new methodology for probing transport of just one electron, a process of great importance both in nature and in artificial devices. Our idea for locating a single electron is analogous to the conventional GPS where signals from several space stations are used to locate a macro object. Using fluorescent molecules as tiny sensors, we will determine the 3-dimensional location of an electron. This approach will be applied to study ionisation of quantum dots, charge transfer in photosynthesis centres and in conducting polymers. Detection of very dim light and positioning sensing molecules close to the electron path without compromising their chemical stability and their brightness are the challenges addressed in the proposal.
