Overview

Professor Rosa Alati is an internationally recognised leader in the fields of life course epidemiology of health. Rosa has made significant contributions to the fields of maternal substance use and offspring outcomes and cognate aspects of developmental and life course epidemiology. She has published widely on the impact of maternal alcohol use on offspring cognition and alcohol use, birth weight on depression and prenatal factors for neuro-development and has an international reputation in these fields. In 2008, Rosa won the Australian 2008 National Drug and Alcohol Award for ‘Excellence in Research’ in recognition of her long term contribution to the field of substance use research.

Rosa has received national and international competitive grants of up to $16 million. She has more than 170 publications overall, most of which are in peer-reviewed journals. She is a principal investigator of the Mater University Study of Pregnancy (MUSP) and other large epidemiological studies, to investigate causal pathways to substance use and mental health outcomes in populations. One international study is the highly regarded ALSPAC study based in Bristol (UK), where upon she studies the effects of prenatal alcohol consumption on child neuro-developmental growth. She is a visiting professor at Oxford and Bologna Universities. Rosa has an interest in linking familial administrative data in a longitudinal way and has developed large datasets of mothers and their children with routinely collected information (e.g hospital admissions, perinatal collections, etc). She is now working towards integrating these longitudinal ‘big’ data with additional State and Commonwealth collections.

Rosa has recently joined the ISSR team. Prior to joining ISSR she was the Head of the Mental Health and Substance Use Unit at UQ’s School of Public Health.
