Overview

Ron graduated in 1972 with first-class honors and a University Medal in Accounting from the University of Queensland. From 1970 to 1973, he worked as a programmer, systems analyst, and project manager in the Queensland Main Roads Department. He then undertook his MBA and PhD in Management Information Systems at the University of Minnesota.

In 1977 Ron returned to Australia as Senior Lecturer in the Department of Accounting and Public Finance at the Australian National University. In 1979 he took up the post of Reader in Commerce at The University of Queensland. In 1981 he was appointed Professor of Commerce, and in 1988 he was the inaugural appointment to the GWA Chair in Commerce, which he held until 1993. In 2004, Ron left the University of Queensland to take up the position of Dean of the Faculty of Information Technology at Monash University. In 2013, he was Pro Vice-Chancellor and Campus President of Monash’s South African campus in Johannesburg.

Ron has been a Visiting Professor at the University of Minnesota, New York University, the University of British Columbia, the University of Alberta, the University of Otago, Nanyang Technological University, and City University of Hong Kong.

Research Interests

  • Conceptual modeling
Conceptual modeling involves creating models, often graphical, of the domain phenomena to be represented in an information system. My research focuses on better ways to model application domain phenomena. I have used ontological theories to inform my research.
  • Conceptual modeling grammars
Conceptual modeling grammars are used to create conceptual models, which are models of the domain phenomena to be represented in an information system. My research focuses on the characteristics that conceptual modeling grammars must possess if they are to be capable of generating conceptual models that represent an application domain clearly and completely.
