Overview

Dr. Sunghun Chung is a Lecturer (equivalent to Assistant Professor) in Information Systems at the UQ Business School, The University of Queensland, Australia. Before joining UQBS in 2015, he was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Information Systems Department in the Desautels Faculty of Management, McGill University in Montreal, Canada. He received his PhD Degree in Information Systems from the College of Business, KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology), South Korea in 2010.

His research interests include business value of IT innovation, business value of social media, and the role of IT in the e-commerce and Internet marketing. His research has appeared in Information & Management, Information Technology and Management, International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS), Conference on Information Systems and Technology (CIST), Workshop of Information Systems and Economics (WISE), among others.

Prior to joining the academia, he worked at Samsung Electronics as a senior researcher and governmental institute, Science and Technology Policy Institute (STEPI), as an associate research fellow. His teaching interests include business analytics, statistical research methodology, IT innovation management, and database management. His teaching courses at UQ Business School are Advanced Business Data Analytics (MGTS3206/7217) and Information Systems Strategy (MGTS3208/7208).

Research Interests

  • Business value of IT innovation
    The goal of this stream of my research is to investigate the relationship between IT innovation such as software patent and firm value. Focusing on econometric-based empirical analysis, this research primarily focuses on the business value and economic impact of IT.
  • Social media and business analytics
    This stream of my research investigates the business value of social media at the firm value, the relationship between social media users and social networking activities, and the impact of consumers' opinions in the firm-initiated social media site on firm performance. By analyzing large-scale unstructured social media data (big data), this research provide a useful methodology based on business analytics.
  • Role of IT in the e-commerce and Internet marketing
    This stream of my research uses experimental design and structural equation modeling to examine the role of IT in the e-commerce and Internet marketing on user behavior and organizational performance.
