Overview

Chawarwan Khan is a post-doctoral research fellow at the school of Chemical Engineering, University of Queensland, Australia. Khan completed his PhD degree in Petroleum Engineering from Curtin University/Australia in 2014. He was formerly a research assistant at Curtin University during his Master and PhD.

Since 2013, Dr Khan’s principle activities have been in three cross-disciplinary projects supported by ANLEC R&D, the Queensland State Smart Futures fund, corporate funds through the UQ Centre for Coal Seam Gas and UQ internal funds. These projects involve a range of academic and post-doctoral research staff from the University of Queensland (from Chemical Engineering, Earth Science and the Sustainable Minerals Institute) and Griffith University (Environmental Engineering & Queensland Micro- and Nanotechnology Centre).

He was initially employed at UQ (prior to his PhD conferral) as a Research Engineer in the School of Chemical Engineering, to provide expertise in the area of petroleum and reservoir engineering. The position entailed a broad remit including responsibility in providing general assistance to senior academic staff in Chemical Engineering and Earth Science for the execution of their duties; for developing and participating in grant applications and executing and supporting (in association with others) research projects.

He was subsequently employed as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow with a role has been to lead the petroleum engineering/reservoir modelling activities. This work has entailed considerable interaction with a range of people of different seniorities, both academic and corporate based. During this period he has also taken on teaching duties in the Petroleum Engineering area for the Master and undergraduate programs.

Research Interests

  • Wettability effects on production behaviour in coal seam gas reservoirs and on CO2 sequestration in saline aquifers.
    provide reservoir simulation supports to the projects funded by the CCSG at the school of Chemical Engineering and the projects funded by ANLEC at the School of Earth Science. The aims are to investigate effects of wettability alterations in coal seam gas reservoirs for enhanced gas recovery purposes and also to investigate CO2-Brine wettability characteristic effects on CO2 trapping mechanisms for West Wandoan field in Surat Basin/Australia.
  • Geochemical and Geo-mechanical Testing of Near Wellbore CO2 Injectivity Improvement.
    Final Report-2014: This project was part of a group of related ANLEC projects supporting Australian CO2 sequestration demonstration and commercial projects.
  • Predicted Wandoan Water Quality Impacts of CO2 injection with SO2 Co-contaminants
    Final Report-2014: This project was funded by CTSCo Pty Ltd to investigate the potential impact on water quality and the volume of water expected to be affected by injection of CO2 with co-contaminants into the Precipice Sandstone in the Wandoan area, Queensland.
  • Thermal Stimulation of Coal Seam Gas Fields: Final Report-2013
    The project was funded by CCSG to investigate opportunity analysis of thermal stimulation of Australian coal seam beds and examined whether well productivity can be sufficiently improved under some reservoir conditions to commercially justify thermal stimulation.
