Overview

Dr Peter Westoby spent 20 years in youth, community and organisation development practice prior to entering academia. He's worked in Australia, India, the Philippines, PNG, South Africa and Uganda. He lives in Brisbane, Australia, but feels more than at home in South Africa and the UK particularly. His research and practice interests are in community development, community-based education-training, dialogue theory and practice, forced migration studies, peace and conflict studies, and the social/solidarity economy. He loves bush walking, hanging out in independent bookshops, and good coffee.

Research Interests

  • Community Development theory and practice
  • Forced Migration studies
  • Peace and conflict studies
  • Dialogue theory and practice

Research Impacts

My research aims to influence policy and program development in community development settings. For example, my research has influenced the shape of community development within South Africa (through the Community Development Directorate in Pretoria), within Vanuatu (see Vanuatu related publications, and amongst refugee groups (see refugee related publications). My work, aimed at researching conceptual frameworks used by community workers, also impacts on community development workers theorising and practice (as they use the frameworks to reflect on their observation, dialogue and intervention practices).
