Overview

Dr. Swarnkar is a young researcher who has just started his career. He received his PhD in Biomedical Engineering from The University of Queensland in 2009. His PhD thesis focused on developing technology for the reliable diagnosis of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), based on brain wave analysis. Dr. Swarnkar, with his colleagues, proposed an innovative method based on hemispherical asymmetry of the brain to characterize OSA. It is a unique and ground breaking attempt to extract apnea-specific information from the brain.

Dr. Swarnkar key areas of research intreset are medical signal processing, signal modeling, acoustic sound analysis, pattern recognition, and instrumentation. His research strengths are EEG analysis in sleep disorders, cough and breathing sound analysis in respiratory diseases.

Research Impacts

Obstructive Sleep Apnea has two major associated dimensions, the respiratory dimension and the neurological dimension. The most conspicuous symptoms of OSA, such as excessive day time sleepiness, higher cognitive difficulties, depression etc. are related to the neurological aspects of sleep. Dr. Swarnkar research contribution in this field focused on developing objective methods for the reliable diagnosis of OSA by incorporating neurological dimension. Some of the specific contributions to OSA research are:

  • Dr. Swarnkar and his colleagues proposed an innovative method based on hemispherical asymmetry of the brain to extract OSA specific diagnostic information. The standard measures for OSA diagnosis have been heavily criticized by clinicians and the research community alike due to the problems of low reproducibility and poor correlation with symptoms/consequences of OSA. The proposed index will help in better characterizing the OSA
  • Dr. Swarnkar and his colleagues developed a fully automated, objective sleepiness analysis technique based on the single channel of EEG. The proposed technology holds promise in the automation of the laboratory tests used for the purpose. It can also be developed into sleep management system, wherein the sleepiness index is incorporated into a sleepiness index alert unit to alarm the user when sleepiness level crosses the predetermined threshold.
  • Working on a highly prestigious project funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Dr. Swarnkar and his colleagues have developed a novel technology to diagnose pneumonia using cough sounds only. This work has led to a patent application . In this project Dr. Swarnkar and his colleagues have developed a completely automated technology to objectively characterize the cough quality (dry/wet). It is the first ever effort to automate the wet/dry cough sound classification in paediatric population.

With colleagues Dr. Swarnkar have published several journal articles and peer-reviewed international conference papers. Recognizing the potential commercial value in his research, The University of QLD has filed 3 provisional patents and one PCT application.
