Overview

Dr Grant Ballantyne is a research fellow in the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC). Energy efficient comminution has become his major research theme, and as such he is focussed on industry applications supported by fundamental theoretical understanding. He have been involved in successful site-based industry research over the past eight years covering four continents and eight commodities. He is passionate about equipping the next generation of metallurgists with the intellectual tools they will need, through undergraduate lecturing, postgraduate supervision and professional development courses. He completed a Bachelor of Engineering (Metallurgy and Chemical) at UQ in 2007 and a Doctorate in Philosophy at the JKMRC in 2012.

Research Impacts

Grant’s research has gained industry recognition, especially through an international non-for-profit group called the coalition for eco-efficient comminution (CEEC). He was recently invited to present a keynote address at the 2014 CEEC workshop in Vancouver, the result of which was that his benchmarking methodology will be adopted by all the members. The aim was set to benchmark over 50% of the global gold and copper producing mines using his methodology before expanding to other commodities.

Energy efficient comminution has become Grant’s major research theme, and as such he is focussed on the industry applications supported by fundamental theoretical understanding. He has been part of research teams investigating process improvements at Tanami (gold), Northparkes (copper/gold), Mineral San Cristobal (lead/zinc/silver), Cadia (copper/gold), Mogalakwena (platinum) and Telfer (copper/gold). In 2014 he has also led two research and training groups (8 researchers including RHD students) to conduct comminution circuit assessment at Sunrise Dam Gold Mine and Citic Pacific’s Iron Project. In one of these investigations a process improvement was identified that could result in an increase in revenue of approximately A$35 million per year.
