Dr Raphael is a recent recipient of the NHMRC Early Career Fellowship. He has a joint appointment at Harvard Medical School, Wellman Centre for Photomedicine, Massachusetts General Hospital, and The University of Queensland.

Since the start of his PhD in 2008 and following its award in 2012, Dr Raphael has consistently contributed to the field of biomedical engineering, in particular micro/nano devices, through high impact publications and patents. His early postdoctoral work at the Dermatology Research Centre, consisted of a research program on the development of novel technologies for enhanced treatment of skin disease. This resulted in several papers and patents, leading to awards at national/international conferences, and the award of both a UQ Postdoctoral Fellowship in 2014 followed by one of Australia's most prestigious early career fellowship - NHMRC CJ Martin Overseas Biomedical Fellowship.

Dr Raphael's long term career goal is to be an expert in microdevice development for topical diagnostic, therapeutic and prophylactic applications. Currently his professional pathway has been on the focus of technologies for topical drug delivery based on a physical understanding of the skin. To further develop his skill set Dr Raphael began a joint research position at Assoc. Prof. Charles Lin’s Group at Harvard Medical School, Wellman Centre for Photomedicine, Massachusetts General Hospital where he will be developing his expertise in noninvasive imaging, biomedical optics and single cell diagnostics. The appointment will complement Dr Raphael's current career by strengthening his biomedical engineering expertise and furthering his fundamental knowledge of cell interaction and characterisation.
