Overview

Janet (Jan) Ferguson a Lecturer in Management specialising in Human Resources Management within the UQ Business School. Jan's specialist area of research focuses on the new human resource in the changing world of work; careers theory, concepts and practice; graduate attributes and skills; the transition from university to professional employment and the different experiences of domestic and international graduates.

Recent research includes the doctorate thesis 2017: Graduates’ perceptions of their attributes when making the transition to employment and in managing their careers.

Jan has published in journals including New Zealand Journal of Applied Business Research, Australian Journal of Career Development and Journal of University Teaching and Learning Practice. Jan is also a reviewer for journals including Journal of University Teaching and Learning Practice, Australian Journal of Career Development, Academy of Management.

Jan has presented at conferences including; International Conference: Philosophy of Management, Oxford, U.K.; New Zealand Applied Business Education Conferences Dunedin and Napier; Australia and New Zealand Academy of Management, ANZAM, Melbourne; Higher Education Research and Development Society of Australasia HERDSA, Hong Kong

Research Interests

  • The different experiences between domestic and international graduates in commencing employment.
    Investigating the different approaches to networking by domestic graduates and Chinese graduates when commencing careers at home and abroad
  • Graduates' career management
    'What factors enable graduate employees’ self-direction and career agency during transition to professional employment: Important messages from graduate employees for managers, undergraduates, careers advisors, and universities
  • Developing graduates professional communication skills
    Perceptions and reflections of domestic and international students about their development and application of communication skills
  • Graduates transition from university to employment
    Interest in exploring how graduates manage their transition to employment and use their graduate attributes and skills.
  • Liminality, graduateness and transition to professional
    Interest in exploring graduates transition experiences from university to employment and from graduate employee to professional employee.
