Overview

Dr Butler obtained his B.Sc.(Hons) majoring in chemistry in 1988 and a PhD in natural product chemistry in 1993 from the University of Melbourne. After postdoctoral work with Prof Pettit at Arizona State University (1993-1994), he worked in a series of industrially-focussed, natural product lead discovery and drug development organisations: Queensland Pharmaceutical Research Institute (QPRI, now part of GRIDD), Griffith University (1994-1999), Centre for Natural Product Research, Singapore (1999-2002) and MerLion Pharmaceuticals (2003-2009). From 2009-2017, he worked at the Institute for Molecular Bioscience (IMB), University of Queensland, with Prof Matthew Cooper on the rational design and pre-clinical development of novel anti-infective drugs with a focus on drug-resistant bacteria and fungi, and inflammation. From 2016-2017, he also studied an MBA at the University of Queensland in the streamlined mode.

Dr Butler is an expert in natural product and analytical chemistry, antibiotics, lead discovery and drug development, and project management. He is currently working with the Director of UQCCR, Prof David Paterson, on a Cooperative Research Centres (CRC) Program application.
