Overview

Yarong obtained her Bachelor and PhD degree in Environmental Engineering from Tianjin University, China. She joined Advanced Water Management Centre (AWMC) at The University of Queensland in 2016 as a joint PhD student and worked with the Sewer Team until her graduation. She successfully finished her PhD research topic in 2.5 years during her stay in AWMC. Besides, she independently managed and conducted 4 consulting projects related with her research topic, which gave her great strength and working experience with water industry. Following her PhD thesis submission in June 2019, she accepted a position as a postdoctoral research fellow at AWMC, working with Prof. Zhiguo Yuan to manage the sewer corrosion team.

Her research is focusing on novel technologies for metal and concrete corrosion control in urban water system, with expertise in investigating material structures using advanced multidisciplinary techniques, and operating laboratory and pilot-scale sewer-related chambers and pipelines. During her PhD study and one-year professional research career, she has greatly contributed to the fundamental understanding of metal and concrete corrosion processes, and its application to the protection of drinking water and wastewater pipes.

She has participated in a few ARC and industry consulting projects regarding concrete sewer corrosion and control, obtained adequate training in independent research and project management, and established strong experience in multidisciplinary research including concrete/metal material, civil, electrochemical, biochemical engineering. Despite that research on concrete corrosion typically involves long-term experiments, and that part of the work was confidential without publication opportunities, she has published 21 peer-reviewed journal papers including six first-authored papers. She is the main inventor of four patents.

Yarong also takes active part in teaching and tutoring one of the master courses.

She was the one of the recipients of the EAIT Early Career Researcher Philanthropic Grant 2020.
