Current research in health sciences and emergency medicine

1969-1973 - BSc Hons University of Newcastle upon Tyne (UK) in Agriculture/Animal Production

1973-1980. MSc and PhD @ University of Florida. Postgraduate research focusing on reproductive physiology and endocrinology of cattle during pregnancy.

In 1980 joined the Department of Physiology within the Veterinary School at the University of Nairobi teaching physiology to veterinary and animal science students.

1982-1992. Institute of Primate Research, National Museums of Kenya. Initially Head of Reproduction thereafter Chief of Research. Biomedical research undertaken with funding from WHO, EU and NIH. Research focus on the menstrual cycle of non-human primates and on care and management of captive primates. Oversaw development of large capacity building program establishing departments of parasitology and virology and research and technical staff training. Established first animal care and use committee (forerunner to institutional ethics commitees) in East Africa and supported development of six other committees in other institutes. Co-director of the Kenyan National Centre for Research in Reproduction.

1992-2001 Member of the Consultative Group of International Agricultural Research. From1992-1997 at the International Laboratory for Research in Animail Diseases and then from 1997-2001 with the International Liverstock Research Institute. Employed as Education Officer overseeing all postgraduate students. Additional responsibilities including chair of animal care and use committee overseeing research predominately in Ethiopia and Kenya but also in institute sites in Zimbabwe and Nigeria. Founder member and Secretary of the Nairobi Cluster of research institutions and Secretary of the sub-Saharan Inter-Centre Training Group.

2001-2003. Academic Coordinator for the Learning and Teaching Support Network Engineering Centre based at Loughborough University (UK). The role provided support to academics in order to improve the provision of learning and teaching in higher education in over 100 British universities.

2004-2012 Senior Research Fellow Centre for Rural and Remote Area Health, University of Southern Queensland. Research to enhance the health of rural and remote people in Australia and internationally by supporting the work of health policy planners, rural and remote area health professionals, health workers, and consumers through rural and remote health research, consultancy work and project management.

2012 – present. Academic Research Manager Princess Alexandra Hospital (Queensland Health) and University of Queensland School of Medicine. Responsible for conducting research, interacting with internal and external collaborators and initiating funding applications within the Emergency Medicine Research Group at the Princess Alexandra Hospital.

2015 - present. Postgraduate Coordinator for Southside Clinical School.

Extensive publication records during active research periods (1973-1992, 2004-present) including three books, five book chapters, edited three procedings of conferences, 26 research reports to government and industry, annual reports and popular articles, 100 conference papers and 100 peer reviewed papers.

Additional experience in the organisation of five international conferences; consultancies for FAO/IAEA; supervision of postgraduate students; external examinar of BVM, BSc, MSc, and PHD students; review papers for six refereed journal; 15 years as member of animal ethics commitees.
