Overview

Dr Martin received the Bachelor degree (with honours) in Electrical and Electronic engineering from the University of Brighton, UK, in 2000. After his degree he joined Racal Electronics, which later became the international company Thales. He worked on communication and avionics systems. In 2004 he left Thales to pursue his PhD at the University of Manchester. He investigated the suitability of using vegetable oils as the liquid insulation of large power transformers, in a project funded by the National Grid, Areva T & D, EDF Energy, M & I Materials, Scottish Power, United Utilities. He was awarded his PhD in 2008. He then joined the Centre for Power Transformers at Monash University in Melbourne, working on condition monitoring techniques for the local Utilities and industry. At the end of 2010 he was promoted to the role of centre director, and oversaw the completion of projects funded by: ASTP, Ausgrid, CIEAM CRC, Citipower/powercor, Cooper Power Systems, Energex, Ergon Energy, Powerlink, Transgrid, Transpower NZ, UKPN and Wilson Transformer Company. He also lectured control for three years.

At the beginning of 2013 he joined UQ, working on transformer condition monitoring techniques. His research interests include:

  • condition monitoring of transformers
  • the study of insulating materials for HV purposes, for instance biodegradable vegetable oils and cellulosic paper
  • the effect of weather on transformer loading, and reliability
  • investigating the impact of power quality problems on transformer relability

Research Impacts

What do we need to do to keep our electricity supply reliable? how can new materials lesson the impact of the grid on our environment? How can we keep costs down while maintaining reliability? are some questions that my work aims to address. The electricity grid is dynamic, it is constantly being changed and augmented. How should we develop it into the future?

The utilities in Australia own assets valued at over $100 billion. Maintaining their reliable operation is paramount.
