Dr Jill Larsen

Honorary Fellow

Prince Charles Hospital Northside Clinical Unit
Faculty of Medicine

Overview

Jill is a Senior Research Officer at QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute within the Oncogenomics Laboratory headed by Professor Nicholas Hayward, with an Honorary Fellow appointment with the School of Medicine at the University of Queensland.

Jill has been specialising in lung cancer research since 2000, training with two lung cancer experts: a PhD with Professor Kwun Fong at the University of Queensland Thoracic Research Centre, The Prince Charles Hospital, Brisbane, Australia (2004-2007) and a postdoctorate with Professor John D. Minna at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (UTSW), Dallas, USA (2008-2012).

Jill is highly experienced in molecular biology, cell biology, genomics and bioinformatics. For her PhD, Jill performed whole-genome mRNA expression profiling of primary lung tumours to identify expression profiles that can predict the likelihood of tumour recurrence in patients. In recognition of her work she was awarded Cure Cancer Australia's National Young Student Researcher of the Year (2007). With the award of an NHMRC CJ Martin Early Career Fellowship and a Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand (TSANZ) Allen and Hanburys Respiratory Research Fellowship, Jill performed her postdoctoral research at UTSW (USA) where she helped develop a unique in vitro cell culture-based model of human bronchial epithelial cells (HBECs) to study lung cancer pathogenesis. Since returning to Australia early 2013, her current research (funded by a Cancer Australia and Cure Cancer Australia PdCCRS Young Investigator Grant) investigates two critical stages of lung cancer pathogenesis: early-stage transformation of lung epithelial cells to malignancy and the metastatic progression of lung tumour cells. The ultimate goal of her research is to identify molecular targets to inhibit the development and progression of lung cancer.

Research Interests

  • Lung cancer development and metastatic progression
  • ZEB1 and epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) in lung cancer
  • In vitro modelling of lung cancer progression using Human Bronchial Epithelial Cells (HBECs)
  • Identification of somatic mutations in lung cancer development
