Overview

Chi-Kong is Reader in History and specialises in modern Chinese social and business history.

Chi-Kong is the only China specialist who has won the American Economic History Association's internationally competitive Best Dissertation Award - the Alexander Gerschenkron Prize. He has published three books: 'The Reminiscences of Charles Cheng Che Lee' (Academia Sincia, 2000 ) and 'The State and Market in Modern China' (Hong Kong Educational Pub, 2002), two edited books and over sixty articles in refereed journals, as well as a number of chapters in books in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, UK, USA, Australia and Canada.

He is currently the chief editor of a book series entitled Business, Innovation and Society in Modern Asia, published by Hong Kong University Press, as well as an Associate Editor of Chinese Business History. He has also been appointed a member of the International Advisory Board of the Centre for the Study of the Chinese Southern Diaspora at ANU and in 2000 became Honorary Professor at the Institute of History, the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences.

His current research projects are on Shanghai business, cultural symbolism, and social mores in modern China. He has done extensive archival research, both nationally and internationally, in search of corporate records, and records of the history of Chinese daily life. He was a faculty fellow for 2004 with the Centre for Critical and Cultural Studies.
