Overview

Brian Haluska is a Senior Research Officer for the Cardiac Imaging Group.

Brian has been involved in clinical research for over 15 years. He is currently PI on two NHMRC grants. Since moving to Australia in 1999, he has help to establish and lead the Cardiovascular Imaging Research group at University of Queensland. His main research interests are in the use of new imaging technologies clinically and incorporating the assessment of arterial function non-invasively in the cardiac exam. This work has led to an international patent application being filed using a new technology for assessing arterial elasticity.

Brian is part-time supervisor of two PhD students and enrolled part time in his own PhD. His main role is as a trouble shooter and teacher to advanced trainees, sonographers, research assistants, post-doc fellows and international colleagues because of his technical expertise in all aspects of cardiac imaging. He works closely with several of the ultrasound companies in research and development, and has done consulting work as an imaging specialist for an international collaborative study using an ultrasound contrast agent (Acusphere Inc, Watertown MA).

Brian has taught echocardiography to hundreds of cardiology registrars and many sonographers while working clinically in the US, and since coming to Australia continues to mentor those who are inexperienced with cardiovascular imaging. He has been an invited speaker to many international meetings: The American Society of Echocardiography Scientific Sessions in 1995, 1996, 1997, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2006, The Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand Scientific Sessions in 2003, 2004 and 2005 and Echo Australia in 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005 as well as local meetings.

Brian is currently a manuscript reviewer for 4 international journals. Grant reviewer for NHF 2002. He has helped to run stress echo meetings in the US and Australia and has given many live demonstrations in cardiac imaging using new technologies.
