Dr Shelley Dole is an Associate Professor in mathematics education at The University of Queensland. She is currently the Program Director of the Master of Teaching (Primary) program and co-Director of the Bachelor of Education (Primary and Middle Years of Schooling) programs. Shelley is an experienced classroom teacher having taught in primary and secondary schools in Victoria, Northern Territory, and Queensland. She has been a tertiary educator and mathematics education researcher for over 15 years and has worked in tertiary institutions in Queensland, Tasmania and Victoria. She has been involved in several major research projects in a range of fields relevant to mathematics education including: proportional reasoning as essential to numeracy; numeracy across the curriculum; science and mathematics knowledge connections; mental computation and students’ invented algorithms; early years literacy and numeracy and distance education; middle years literacy and numeracy for ‘at-risk’ students. Her research interests focus particularly on promoting students’ conceptual understanding of mathematics to encourage success and enjoyment of mathematical investigations in school.
