Overview

Ata Worked several years in the steelmaking area as a process engineer of electric arc furnaces (EAF). He did PhD in metallurgical engineering at the University of Queensland (2010-2013). The topic of his thesis was investigation of freeze-lining in metallurgical reactors.

his interests are high temperature reaction systems, steelmaking, slag/matte/gas equilibrium in copper production, refractory and kinetics of reactions.

Now, He is with PYROSEARCH as a postdoctoral research fellow.

Research Impacts

The findings of Ata's PhD thesis demonstrate the basis for, and potential benefits that may follow from, operating the reactor at temperatures below the liquidus temperature, i.e. with solids present, without a catastrophic build-up of solids. This change in design concept could result in significant decreases in operating temperature, energy and operating cost savings.

A recent investigation is the characterisation of the phase chemistry and slag interactions with refractories. Post-mortem analysis of the spent bricks from smelter followed by isothermal laboratory tests including submergence of refractory fingers into the liquid slag as well as equilibration of slag and refractory under controlled conditions. Electron probe X-ray microanalysis (EPMA) is used to measure the compositions of the phases across the samples. This information is linked to the phase equilibria. Thermodynamic modelling is carried out by FactSage to assist in interpretation of the results. Changing slag chemistry through fluxing may form of a protective primery phase layer i.e spinel on the hot face slowing refractory dissolution.
