Overview

Dr Carreira's research is focus on understanding the role of mobile elements ("jumping genes") in human diseases.

She completed her PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Granada (Spain) identifying regulatory regions in trypanosomatid mobile elements and the potential implications the presence of these mobile elements have in diseases caused by these parasites (Chagas disease, Sleeping sickness and Leishmaniasis).

Since 2013, Dr Carreira has been working in Prof Geoff Faulkner's lab at Mater Research Institute-UQ investigating the role of mobile elements in cancer initiation and progression.
