Overview

Over the years, Yifan’s research interest aims at the system-level development of innovative RF/Microwave devices for remote sensing and communication applications. An integrated design methodology based on the electromagnetic principle was utilized throughout whole system development from RF transceivers, Antennas, Mechanic framework, to Microwave Imaging Reconstruction Algorithms.

Since 2014, he has been working with EM Solutions for a millimeter-wave reconfigurable antenna project based on a novel flat-panel structure. The proposed antenna system could be placed on mobile platforms (such as vehicles, airplanes, ships or trains) to provide a continuous broadband wireless link to satellites.

Yifan has authored and co-authored over 58 research papers and filled 8 Australian and international patents. Besides research, He has been acting in teaching, RHD supervising, grant application and bridging commercialization sectors that translate university intelligence into the innovation-driven economy.

From Shanghai, China, Yifan received the BE degree in electrical engineering from Donghua University before joining IBM as an information system architecture specialist. In 2012, he joined the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) as a visiting researcher. He received the Ph.D. degree from the University of Queensland, Australia, in 2013.

Available Projects

  • Satellite communication on-the-move (SOTM) terminal is an antenna subsystem that placed on mobile platforms (such as vehicles, airplanes, ships or trains) to provide a continuous broadband wireless link to satellites. Thus, the terminals will establish a mobile communication hub through a remote satellite, which is independent of any terrestrial networks, enabling the delivery of high-speed voice, data and video traffic. With the recent developments in which Google started a project of launching many moving low-orbit satellites (not stationary) to provide reliable broadband telecommunication services worldwide, there is a need for a low-cost reconfigurable antenna that can track those moving satellites. It is expected that the market for such an antenna subsystem is huge.

  • This project aims to investigate building a microwave non-destructive testing and evaluation (NDT&E) system to inspect concrete, timber and fiberglass-composite structures in Marine industry.
