Overview

The central focus of our research is to elucidate molecular eventscontrolling biological processes and pathological states through the application of bioinformatics, genome and transcriptome sequencing and array based technologies.

Professor Sean Grimmond is the Director of the Queensland Centre for Medical Genomics and leads Australia's effort into the study of pancreatic and ovarian cancer as part of the International Cancer Genome Consortium (www.icgc.org)

Research Interests

  • Pioneering Personalized Cancer Genomics:
    The ICGC program is also forming the foundations needed to create genomic applications of tangible clinical benefit such as molecular classification of cancer, improved diagnoses, new cancer surveillance methods, and strategies for selecting personalized therapeutic regimes. These advances will only be made possible though development of constantly evolving sequencing technology and conquering the colossal task of rapid integrated genome analysis for cancer research and clinical application.
  • Cohort-based Cancer Genomics:
    Genome sequencing is revolutionizing our ability to study the underlying molecular events driving human disease. In the case of cancer, collating an individual�s somatic mutation profile is now a reality. In 2009, Sean established the Queensland Centre for Medical Genomics and was awarded the Australian International Cancer Genome Consortium Program aimed at sequencing the matched normal and tumour genomes and transcriptomes for 500 pancreatic and ovarian cancer patients. The program is apporaching the completing of the first 100 patients and has provided unprecdented insight into the molecular driving events in panreatic cancer
  • Functional annotation of genomes and transcriptomes:
    Prof Grimmond has been actively involved in assessing the true complexity of RNA expression from mammalian loci and modelling the RNA mediated control of development and disease.
