Overview

Michael is currently a research fellow in the School of Chemical Engineering working on polymer material development and testing.

Michael works on research projects involving industrial interaction with the university so there is a translational research link between the university and industry. His research involves research and development projects, material testing, consulting work, processing formulations, film blowing and extrusion projects. He also assist with undergraduate and postgraduate polymer investigation and processing project work. Duties also include lab management and to maintain the processing equipment to provide a reliable and high performance research facility, to train new users of the facilities and assist with extrusion operations. He was heavily involved in a Cooperative Research Centre for Polymers (CRC-P) at UQ which investigated degradable agricultural films.

Research Impacts

Michael has worked with industry to investigate and develop degradable crop propagation agricultural films with the goal that these films would breakdown over a short period of time in the field as the crop emerges. This would reduce the amount of agricultural film that is left to degrade over a much longer period of time in a field and reduce the cost of removing the film, film disposal, transport, etc. for the user. These films would act as a mini-greenhouse to promote crop growth and then degrade as the plant growth occurs to let the crop emerge to the environment from an environment that was conductive to early crop growth.
