Determinants, Motives and Channels of Pacific Island Workers' Remittances from Australia (2009–2011)

Abstract:
This survey-based study aims to advance our understanding of the extent and economic determinants of remittances fro Australia to the Pacific islands. Our focus is new and addresses both urban and rural and long- vs short-term migration. This will inform current policy debates concerning temporary migrant worker schemes. We quantify and analyse econometrically migrants' earnings and remittances. We develop innovative assessments of the full extent of remittances in all forms and through all channels. The findings will identify the responsiveness of remittances to perceived and actual transfer costs and income risk, which are vital for good policy development.
