Locating television: an international study of the changing socio-cultural functions of television (2011–2014)
This project investigates the socio-cultural function of television through studies of its consumption in Mexico, Cuba and the Philippines. Responding to the need to generate contingent and located accounts of the changing function of television beyond the customary Anglo-American research sites, this project will generate a transnational comparative account of the varied functions of television. A focus on the role of national contexts and identities will challenge the 'end of television' thesis associated with television studies in the post-broadcast era. Combining methods and theoretical developments from cultural studies and cultural anthropology, the project outcomes include symposia, a joint authored monograph, and journal articles.
