Prioritising socially and economically viable land- and sea-based investments to protect coral reefs (2011–2014)

Abstract:

Coral reefs have exceptional biodiversity, support the livelihoods of millions of people, and are threatened by many activities on land and in the sea.Currently, investments in ocean conservation cannot trade-off land vs. sea-based actions.We will develop a novel prioritisation approach to guide investments in conservation actions that mitigate land- and sea-based threats to reefs and apply it to the Coral Triangle, an area of significant global attention.We will develop models to predict the spatial distribution and magnitude of prevalent threats to and socioeconomic costs of protecting reefs.Our project will guide decisions on where and in which actions to invest to ensure cost-effective conservation results in the face of climate change.
