The mathematics of novel magnetic memory materials (ARC Discovery Project administered by Uni of Sydney) (2012–2014)
We will develop a mathematical theory of the stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation, which will lay the
foundations for understanding ferromagnetic materials with novel nanostructures. Such materials will be
used in next-generation magnetic memory devices, the leading technology for managing digital information.
New magnetic nanostructures promise to accelerate device speed by three orders of magnitude and
dramatically increase the density of information storage. However, their sensitivity to small random
fluctuations that can destroy the stored data is not understood. Our mathematical and numerical analysis will
thus enable a paradigm shift in the area of magnetic memories and lead to much smaller and faster devices.
