Gender Violence, Women's Empowerment and Human Rights in Melanesia: Exploring the French Connection. (2013–2016)

Abstract:
This project examines the relationship between gender violence and women's empowerment. It challenges the widely accepted view that advocacy promoting women's human rights is both central to, and sufficient for, the promotion of women's physical security in non-western settings. Through comparative analysis of women's attitudes to gender violence in Vanuatu, Fiji and New Caledonia, this study will take a broader view. It will explore how broader socio-cultural and political factors may explain an emerging resistance to violence in some contexts. This analysis will demonstrate the need for new debate on the global proliferation of gender violence which twins a focus on rights promotion with broader gender empowerment strategies.
