Creating Histories of the Australian Paralympic Movement: A New Relationship between Researchers and the Community (2014–2018)

Abstract:
The Paralympic Games are fast approaching their Olympic cousins in popularity and profile as an international sporting spectacle. Yet little is known about disability sport since its introduction into Australia in the 1950s. The project will analyse the birth, development and maturation of the Paralympic movement; and it will show how sport has challenged the disadvantages faced by people with disabilities and contributed to shifting patterns of social perceptions of disability. This complex and motivating story will be created by a new community of practice that connects historians, Paralympians, specialist online writers and editors, and the broader community.
