Autonomy in Shakespeare and Some of His Commentators (2007–2009)

Abstract:
The project will explore how the aspiration to autonomy or self-determination, both individual and collective, features in Shakespearean texts and in selected commentaries on Shakespeare. The project will result in the first comprehensive account of this theme as it manifests in both Shakespeare s works and in representative commentaries (both scholarly and other) on those works. By addressing this aspect of our understanding of Shakespeare the project also contributes to the historical understanding of the ideal of personal and collective autonomy generally.
