Surviving Financial Crises: A study of the Australian Government Securities Market (administered by Australian National University) (2011–2012)
Abstract:
In times of financial crises, investors increase demand for low risk Government securities. It is therefore
imperative that Government securities markets are sufficiently liquid to satisfy demand and facilitate trading. The aim of this study is to determine what constitutes sufficient liquidity in the Australian government securities market. Benchmarking against international practice will provide a standard for comparison. The research outcomes from this project will provide a definitive measure of the necessary capacity of the
Government securities market to meet liquidity demands. Finally, we test whether having sufficient liquidity
helped some countries better survive the global financial crisis.
