Lives in limbo: An anthropology of refugee experiences in Malaysia (2014–2017)

Abstract:

This project will produce the first comprehensive ethnography of Malaysia's refugee and asylum seeker population. This diverse population is of key strategic significance to Australia's migration policy. Many of the refugee and asylum seekers living in Malaysia are in transit, awaiting permanent resettlement to a Western country. Understanding the everyday lives of such refugees is crucial to the development of evidence-based policy necessary to deal with the region's growing refugee crisis. This theoretically innovative work will advance the anthropology of multiculturalism and refugees as well as producing a rich body of work detailing the largely undocumented lives of refugees in Malaysia.
