Co-Evolutionary Dynamics of Culture and Social Structure (ARC Discovery Project administered by the University of Melbourne) (2014–2015)

Abstract:
There is growing recognition that solutions of contemporary societal problems require cultural transformations, namely, widespread changes in the ideas and practices of community members. We propose a new theory of cultural dynamics that examines the co-evolution of shared cultures and social networks in such transformations. The project aims to test the theory in laboratory and field settings, and to build agent-based computer simulation models, and to use a new methodological framework to analyse human behavioural and computer simulation data. Upon completion, this novel theoretical and methodological approach will be ready for more socially significant and policy relevant applications in community planning and societal change.
