NHMRC-ARC Dementia Fellowship (Aus Based) - L1 retrotransposition: the missing link between genetics and environmental factors in Parkinson's disease? (2016–2021)
- Abstract:
- My research proposal aims to uncover new epigenetic mechanisms involved in Parkinson¿s disease (PD) and its progression to dementia, and the interaction of epigenetics with genetics and environmental risk factors involved in triggering disease. The project will combine a study on postmortem human samples with in vivo PD mouse models to systematically understand the role of epigenetics mechanisms in causing PD and promote its progression. Moreover, the final aim is to assess how these can be modulated for therapeutic strategies. Therefore the proposed project aligns very well with the aims of the scheme in the dementia research framework, whilst also likely being distinct to many other proposed studies. The project will benefit from access to the excellent expertise and equipment of Clem Jones Center for Ageing Dementia Research at UQ.
